carmen.g.carballeira: CO Mayo, Ireland; Spanish born painter Carmen Garcia's first 'official' art exhibition held in Westport in 2006, immediately marked out the young artist as something original and utterly refreshing, when within two hours of opening the doors every single painting on the blank white walls was sold. This unique achievement, for a relatively unheard of local artist, is all the more remarkable when one learns she had never so much as picked up a paint-brush until only a few short years ago. But this absence of formal training has worked very much in favour of the Westport based painter, enabling her to use watercolours and textured canvass in her own, innovative and unique manner, with no restrictions or loyalty to the traditional use of those materials. Her bold, rich and often layered works capture a very simple image, a scene that would ordinarily be nothing more than a brief snapshot of life in all of its everyday banality. Yet through the artist's intuitive sensibilities, they are filled with the very real and often raw human emotions taken from across the spectrum of what we ourselves experience in some way every moment of daily life.
